These two eagles are three-and-a-half to four-year-old “sub-adults” putting on an aerial display as they are counted for survey day. They have the white head, hackles and tail of an adult, but the white has dark stippling, and the brown wings and body are slightly mottled. They will have full adult plumage after their fifth-year molt.

Counting eagles: the annual mid-winter eagle survey

For those who heard or saw a low-flying helicopter traveling along the river valley or other places in the region on January 10: it wasn’t an aerial search for lost persons or renegade bank robbers. The second week in January is traditionally the time for wildlife census takers to tally the number of eagles across New York State and most of the other states in the nation.

Applications due for environmental grants

REGION—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is accepting grant applications for its Community Action for a Renewed Environment (CARE) Program.

Proposals are due by March 17. EPA will conduct three conference calls on January 18, February 11 and 27, for prospective applicants to ask questions about the application process.

Ice fishing derby for youth

YULAN, NY—The Beaver Brook Rod and Gun Club will hold its annual Youth Ice Fishing Derby Day on Saturday, February 2, at the club’s Lake Labarr, located near the intersection of Lackawaxen Road and the Cochecton Turnpike. A make-up date of February 23 has been set aside in case ice conditions do not permit fishing on February 2.
