An era in Eldred passes with Vivian Shaeffer Dickson

Vivian Shaeffer Dickson was revered as one of the oldest alumni of Eldred Central School (ECS). She graduated in 1932 from the first high school in the area, called Eldred Union. This wooden frame structure stood on the hill behind the Congregational Church in Eldred. The doors first opened in 1929. Dickson was in the third graduating class. Records show that local administrators called it Eldred High School that year for the first time, but the state called it Eldred Union until much later.

The school’s five teachers taught subjects ranging from science, history, math, English, German, and Latin to music. There was no gymnasium yet and no physical education during the regular school day when Dickson attended. The gym was added the following year. The long-time and well-known librarian, the late Dorothy Barker Sulzbach, had not been hired yet. The idea for constructing Eldred Central School was only on the drawing board and in the fundraising stages, directed by superintendent Frederick J. Lewis, when Dickson graduated. But 10 years later, in the middle of a school day in January of 1943, students of Eldred Union (Grades K-12) transferred into the brick facility used today. In September of that year, the state issued a certificate changing the name Eldred Union to Eldred Central School.

Vivian Dickson has been recognized and honored at past ECS alumni reunions. Her passing is a special loss for all graduates of the school.
