Callicoon Theatre leads up to Oscars with screenings of award prospects

CALLICOON, NY — Seven “award-worthy” films —those that have been nominated for Golden Globe Awards or are in strong contention for Academy Award nominations—will be screened from Friday, January 18 through through Monday, March 3 at the Callicoon Theater.

Films already booked are “American Gangster,” “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Michael Clayton,” “I Am Legend,” “No Country For Old Men,” “Juno” and “The Great Debaters.” The theater also plans to screen nominees “There Will Be Blood,” “The Kite Runner,” “Atonement” and others.

“We successfully scheduled a similar program of nominees prior to the Academy Awards in February 2006,” Jim Kayton said. Jim and Barbara Kayton have owned and operated the unique single-screen Callicoon Theater for 22 years. “A number of people asked if we were presenting a similar program this year and, since we hadn’t yet screened a number of the films, we decided to do so.”

The booked films lead up to the Academy Award presentations. After closing for the month of March the Callicoon Theater will resume screenings of additional award winners and nominees.

The Callicoon Theater, celebrating its 60th year in 2008, recently was named Best Movie Theater in the region for the 12th consecutive year by readers of The River Reporter. A complete list of Award Films can be found on page 5 of this issue.
