Blazing Comets receive fall sports accolades
By RICHARD A. ROSS
FALLSBURG, NY The appearance of comets has always been regarded as something noteworthy in celestial happenings. But with the recent resurgence of the Fallsburg Comets athletic teams, led by boys soccer, awe attributed to Comets will now take on a more down-to-earth relevance, especially here in Sullivan County.
On hand to celebrate the exploits of the fall modified, junior varsity and varsity fall teams on December 6 were a bevy of parents, coaches, players and well-wishers who listened to athletic director Janet Careys welcome that was followed by a salute to each of the teams, their award winners and the schools burgeoning list of scholar athletes.
Fallsburg may have had its athletic struggles over recent years, but like Liberty, it is re-emerging as a force. One of its greatest athletic assets lies with its fledgling football program, which should yield a varsity team in the not-too-distant future.
One by one, the teams were called to the stage to receive their certificates. Each varsity coach designated a Most Improved Player, the team MVP and a recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.
Varsity award winners were as follows:
Boys varsity soccer Most Valuable Player, Bill Miller, Most Improved Player, Darius Buckner, Sportsmanship Award, Noah Espinoza; girls varsity tennis MVP, Bianca Rappaport, MIP, Cheyenne Cali, Sportsmanship Award, Patricia Singh; Girls varsity soccer Sectional Keeper Award, Ashley Hong; Girls varsity volleyball MVP, Dana Maytheni, Sportsmanship Awards, Jaimie Stickle and Stephanie Melendez. Daniela Gonzlez received a Section Nine recognition award for volleyball.
