CLIFFORD ALLEN
Clifford Allen of Matamoras, PA, retired from A & W Products and a lifetime area resident, died Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. He was 78.
He was born September 10, 1929 in Port Jervis, the son of the late Harold E. and the late Jennie Weigel Allen Sr.
A former 18-year employee at Weiss Laurel Grove Greenhouse, he was a 1948 graduate of Matamoras High School. He was a member of Local No. 445.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce P. Hazen Todd Allen at home; his daughter, Colleen Allen of Matamoras; two step-sons, Jeffrey Todd and wife Terri of Matamoras and Larry Todd and wife Erma of Sparrowbush, NY; a step-daughter, Julie Anne Soberg and husband John of Matamoras; a brother, Robert Allen and wife Marie of Columbia, MO; a sister, Eleanor Dilger of Bethlehem, PA; a sister-in-law, Julia Allen of Matamoras; two step-grandchidrens; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Leroy Allen and Harold E. Allen, Jr.
Funeral services were held on November 6, 2007 at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis, NY where Rev. Glenn Scheyhing officiated.
Burial was at Pine Grove Cemetery, Matamoras.

BERTHA "BERT" BENNETT
Bertha Bert Bennett died November 12, 2007. She was 90.
She was the wife of the late Dr. Arnold Doc Bennett and the late Leon Katz. Born in Philadelphia, Bert resided in Narrowsburg from 1949 until 1979 and was an active member of the community. She is survived by daughters, Beverly Bennett Green and her husband Stephen and Carolyn Bennett Kramer; grandchildren Mark Green, Kerrin Green Robinson, and Ana Kramer; and great grandchildren Hannah Rose, Elizabeth Grace, Samantha Sage and Jacob Daniel.
After leaving Narrowsburg, Bert relocated to the Philadelphia area. Many will remember her as a skilled porcelain artist (china painter) and teacher. She was still painting and an active member of her community until her death.
ELINOR BOWERS EMERY
Elinor Bowers Emery, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at the Susquehanna Nursing and Rehab Center in Johnson City, NY. She was 87 years old.
Elinor is now home and at peace with her Heavenly Father and back in the arms of her beloved husband of 70 years, Frederick Reuben Emery Sr., who predeceased her on May 20, 2005.
The daughter of the late Floyd and Sylvia Barry Bowers, she was born on March 7, 1920 in Cooks Falls, NY.
A family statement reads, Mom will be best remembered as a caregiver to many! Over the years, Mom worked as a housekeeper, nurses aide at an area hospital and nursing home. How she loved her horse, Susie, and dogs Muffit and Tiba.
Survivors include two sons, Frederick Emery Jr. and wife Judith of Livingston Manor, NY and Floyd Emery and wife Joyce of Verona, VA; one daughter, Linda Vick and husband Bill of Binghamton, NY; one sister, Sylvia Hendrickson; sisters and brother-in-law Pauline Gray and Mary and James Young; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband; a grandson, Brent Floyd Emery; her parents, Floyd and Sylvia Bowers; brothers and their wives Vincent and Josephine, Willie and Inabelle and Leamon; brothers-in-law Francis Furch and Carl Gray; and a cousin, Helen Lawrence.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 26 at the Harris Funeral Home, Roscoe, NY. The Rev. Robert W. Hoag officiated. Burial was made in the Riverview Cemetery, Roscoe.
CARL E. JOHNSON SR
Carl E. Johnson Sr. passed away peacefully at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA on November 22, 2007.
A Narrowsburg, NY resident since 1943, he was born November 2, 1919 in Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Mr. Johnson was a retired tree surgeon who operated a business in Sullivan County for 40 years. He was predeceased in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary, and his son, Daniel. He is survived by a son, Carl E. Johnson Jr., a Florida resident; and a daughter, Ellen E. Flynn of Albany, NY; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
His family invites friends to share in a memorial celebration of his life to be held on Saturday, January 5 at 1:00 p.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg.

DANIEL RICHARD PAUL DICK MCLAUGHLIN
Daniel Richard Paul Dick McLaughlin, a retired painter at the New Haven Navy Yard and the Long Island Railroad, died on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at home. He was 84 years old.
The son of the late John and Catherine Tierney McLaughlin, he was born August 18, 1923 in New York City. He was married to Pilar T. Garcia McLaughlin. He was a member of the St. Francis Church in Youngsville, NY, and the Jeffersonville, NY Senior Citizens. He was a United States Army Air Corp veteran of WW II.
He is survived by his wife, Pilar T. Garcia McLaughlin, at home; two sisters, Dorothy Mauer of Wading River, NY and Patricia Gianotti of Poughkeepsie, NY; two brothers, Thomas McLaughlin of Cortland Manor, NY and Joseph McLaughlin of Yonkers, NY; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, James McLaughlin, Helen Stewart, John McLaughlin, Mary Garcia and William McLaughlin.
A funeral mass was celebrated on Saturday, November 24 at St. Francis Church in Youngsville with Father Ignatius Smith officiating.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Youngsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Church, Youngsville, NY 12791 or to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan County, 800 Stonybrook, Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
LAWRENCE E. NEWPORT
Lawrence E. Newport, age 81, of Equinunk, PA, died Thursday, November 22, 2007 in Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. He was married to the former Phyllis Bryant. They were married for 45 years.
Lawrence was born in Braman, PA, the son of the late Ernest and Agnes Kehrley Newport. He operated a sawmill in Lookout, PA before retiring. Lawrence often volunteered his time and expertise to the Equinunk Historical Society at the Joel Hills Water-Powered Sawmill at Duck Harbor.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Keesler and husband Kirk of Denham Springs, LA and Janice Klinkiewicz of Honesdale; a son, Todd Newport of Damascus, PA; two grandsons, William of Denham Springs and Timothy Thompson and wife Christin of Denham Springs; two sisters, Irma Bush of Newark, NJ and Lucille Yager of Rome, NY; a brother, Ivan Newport of Honesdale; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 26, 2007 at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, Honesdale with Don Olsommer officiating.
Burial took place at the Hillside Cemetery, Damascus.

SHIRLEY Y. SANDERCOCK
Shirley Y. Sandercock, 87, formerly of Grove Street, Honesdale, PA died Friday, November 23, 2007 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale. She was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Sandercock, on May 14, 1982.
Born October 23, 1920 in Calkins, PA, she was the daughter of the late Warren N. and Helen Jackson Yerkes. She was a graduate of Damascus High School, class of 1938, and later worked as a secretary at Erks Insurance Agency. Shirley enjoyed gardening and interior decorating and was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Honesdale.
Surviving is her son, Reed Sandercock and wife Dianne of Greentown; a sister, Doris Hocker and husband George of Honesdale; grandchildren Grant Gregory, Stacy Brown, Marci Brand and Brian Hernandez; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Margie Ann Sandercock, in 2005; and her brother William Yerkes.
Her funeral will be Saturday, December 1, 2007 at the Honesdale Central United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Ted Muller and Pastor Becky Sweet officiating. Friends may visit the church from 12:00 noon until service time. As per her request, cremation will follow at Maple Hill Crematory in Archbald, PA and private interment will be in Glen Dyberry Cemetery.
