Eldred modified girls soccer has successful season

Young Yellowjackets cap off 9-1 season

ELDRED, NY - One doesn’t usually read about the successes of modified teams during the sports seasons. Because they are the learning ground and feeder teams for jayvee and varsity teams, the importance of modified sports should not be down played. One such team that should be mentioned is Eldred’s modified girls soccer team.

Led by six ninth graders, the team had an incredible season, finishing 9-1. Play was dominated by the skillful and strong Samantha Ferguson, whose assault on the goal was a threat in every game. Heather Ouellette controlled the midfield with her quick speed, accurate passes and outside shots. Adding defensive force to the team was sweeper Kim Elvin, goalie Diana Schombs and seventh-grade stopper Emily Bisland.

Many eighth graders added to the success on the playing field. Speedy wings Brianna Brucher and Alexis Pierce perfected their own crossing shots, as well as assisting many goals. Caitlin Hallock, Courtney Hofaker and Kayla Flieger played strongly every game, heading, trapping and making powerful passes up the midfield. Fullbacks Danielle Baumgarner, Katarina Mercado and Robyn Tighe added to the defense by limiting opposing team scoring. Potential was shown by Kayce Drasher, Andrea McKerrell, Rebecca Schadt and Miranda Schwartz as a back-up goalie. Promising play by seventh graders Kalyn Drasher, Abigail Ellert and Mikaela Balsano rounded out the team.

The team is coached by Kelly Robertson, who is in her fifth year of coaching modified girls soccer at Eldred. When asked, Robertson complimented her team’s strong, aggressive play and their knowledge of the game. Assisted on defense by volunteer coach Shari VanHage, the team learned how to better defend their goal and carry the ball upfield.

With strong coaches and players, the Eldred modified girls soccer team has a bright strong future.
