Learn about layers of life in the forest

MAYFIELD, PA — The Wayne/Lackawanna Forest Landowners Association and the Northeast PA Audubon society will co-sponsor a program about the interrelationship of the forest canopy and its bird and wildlife population at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 15 at the Heritage Valley center.

Forestry expert and consultant Bruce Robinson will present a slide show and talk that will help landowners look at their woodlot with new eyes. The program will center on forest structure, or the many layers of the forest, including the canopy, understory, shrub, herbaceous and litter layers. Using nesting and feeding birds to illustrate how each of the layers are used, will give a fresh look at how forest diversity may be just as dependent on forest layering as on multiple species. Bruce will present some unique concepts for managing forest structure to develop a healthy forest as well as a varied population of birds and animals.

The program is free, but RSVP at 570/253-4032.
