Two new women supervisors, Tusten Republicans sweep

By FRITZ MAYER

MONTICELLO, NY — Several races that were too close to call on election day, were settled after a count of absentee and affidavit votes at the board of elections offices on November 14.

Republican Tina Palacek, who faced off against Democrat Larry Fishman for the office of Highland Supervisor was 10 votes ahead when the ballot counting started. When it ended, Palecek was still 10 votes ahead, and she will be the next supervisor of the town.

Another race for supervisor, this one in Callicoon, was also too close to call on November 6. Democratic challenger Linda Babicz was seven votes ahead of her opponent Republican Gregg Semenetz. After the counting of the absentee ballots, Babicz was eight votes ahead, and she will be the new supervisor there.

In the tight race between the four candidates for two council seats in the Town of Tusten, Republican Lisa Dowling, who went into the count with the most votes, also came away with the most, so she will take one seat. Republican Lewis Meckel, who went in to the count with the fewest votes, came in second place after the absentee counting, beating the next candidate by just five votes. Meckle will retain his seat on the board.

The results for county legislature, District 1, have not yet been determined. We will post them when received.
