Students vote for state butterfly

ELDRED, NY — Students throughout New York State are being asked to help select an official state butterfly. After the final tally, the winning butterfly will be voted on in the assembly and senate. The nominees for state butterfly are: black swallowtail, Karner blue butterfly, Milbert’s tortoiseshell, mourning cloak and red spotted purple or white admiral. Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther has visited local schools to explain the voting process to them. At Mackenzie Elementary, the third- and fourth-grade both selected the red spotted purple or white Admiral and the fifth grade selected the Karner blue. The actual voting in the assembly will be broadcast on cable television, so the students will be able to watch democracy in action.
