Wall sculptures and large format photographs premiere at the Catskill Artists Gallery

LIBERTY, NY — The Catskill Artists Gallery at 38 South Main Street will feature an exhibition of wall and standing sculptures by Robert Friedman including “Cloud People,” and large-format narrative photographs by Hank Schneider. The opening day will be Saturday, October 13 with a reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The show will run through Sunday, November 25.

Both Friedman and Schneider live and work in rural Sullivan County and are influenced by their natural surroundings. The Catskill Artists Gallery is a member-operated co-op gallery that opened in 2002 to present the work of area artists and craftspeople. Friedman wrote, “The recent ‘Cloud People’ series utilizes photographic images, acrylic forms, collage and color. Included are human figures in unusual juxtapositions, suggesting hidden stories. Sculptures based on nature forms will also be shown.”

Schneider wrote, “When I first opened my photographic studio in New York City, many years ago, a photographer friend said, ‘Put your ideas into large format—people who work in large format are always busy.’ I took his advice and learned to love working with a camera that looks like a throwback to the 19th century, complete with black cloth under which the photographer looks at the upside-down image. The 8-inch by 10-inch slides that result, with their incredible sharpness, clarity and wealth of detail, are indeed always in demand.

“As using the large format is expensive and time-consuming, I learned to be very selective as to what I photograph. The creative impulse led me to answer questions such as, ‘What exactly happens when an egg falls into a pile of flour—or a marshmallow into a cup of hot chocolate?’ with carefully crafted images.”

Regular gallery hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.
