Walking tour of historic cemetery continues centennial celebration

PORT JERVIS, NY — There will be a walking tour of the Laurel Grove Cemetery on Saturday, September 15 at 1:00 pm. The tour is part of the year-long celebration of remembering the chartering of the City of Port Jervis in 1907, and will assist the cemetery in its current fund-raising campaign to make improvements at the cemetery. Peter Osborne, the executive director of the Minisink Valley Historical Society, which is sponsoring the tour along with the Port Jervis Centennial Committee, will lead the tour.

Participants will meet at the cemetery’s front gate on East Main Street near the Neversink River Bridge. Refreshments will be served, and a commemorative history will be given out. The leisurely walk, on a paved roadway, will take about two hours and will include discussions on the history of graveyards and cemeteries in America. Participants will see some of the more interesting grave markers in the cemetery and visit the Tri-State Monument, where the states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania meet.

The Laurel Grove Cemetery is one of the most beautiful places to visit in the City of Port Jervis. Its winding roads, scenic vistas of both the Neversink and Delaware rivers and the location of the Tri-State Rock make it a great place for a leisurely drive. Located on East Main Street, the cemetery represents what was happening across America in terms of park and cemetery landscape designs in the mid-19th century.
