FireCrow to spark this years PowWow Festival
Native American music, dancing, foods and crafts to liven the celebration on the banks of the Delaware
NARROWSBURG, NY PowWow Festival 2007 will be held at Narrowsburg, New York, on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9 at the Landers Campgrounds on the Delaware, behind the Tusten Theater. The festival opens at 10:00 each day, with a Grand Entrance at 12:00 noon.
Renowned flute player Joseph FireCrow will be featured. FireCrows honors include the Songwriter of the Year award at the fifth annual Native American Music Awards, winner for Legend of the Warriors, nominee in Best Native American Music Album category at the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards for Cheyenne Nation, and the soundtrack for Ken Burns documentary Lewis & Clark: Corps of Discovery. Most recently, he was the winner of the 2005 Best Instrumental Recording for Parmlys Dream from the album Signature.
Hovia Edwards will also perform at the PowWow. Edwards is a renowned second-generation flute player who recently won the title Miss Sho-Ban 2007-8 (Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, Fort Hall, ID). Edwards has released many recordings, including her albums Morning Star and Reflections, with Robert Tree Cody, both on Canyon Records, featuring solos and duets on the Native American Flute that exemplify the grace and healing power of this timeless instrument.
Head dancers will be Joyce Hayes and Bill Hayes. Bill Hayes is a well known and esteemed Mens Northern Traditional Style Dancer on the Native American Powwow circuit, and is very well respected by his peers as one of the finest Straight Style Northern Traditional dancers. He is well known for creating traditional dance outfits and dance bustles, and has performed throughout Europe with First Nations Dance Troupe and in the United States with the Fort Hall Intertribal Dancers. Bill resides on the Shoshone-Bannock Indian Reservation in Fort Hall with his wife Joyce, and is employed as a prosecutor for the Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Court of the Fort Hall Indian reservation.
Joyce Hayes, wife of Bill Hayes, is an internationally renowned Womens Northern Traditional Style Dancer, and she is well known throughout powwow country for the beautiful beaded dance outfits that she creates and wears while competing at major powwows and gatherings. Joyce has performed throughout Europe with the First Nations Native American Dance Troupe, and throughout the United States with the Fort Hall Intertribal Dance Troupe. At home, Joyce is employed as the director of the Title 6 Elderly Nutrition Program for the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes. The program provides daily nutritious meals and daily activities for the Tribal Elders of the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.
In addition to the headliners, there will be a variety of entertainments including Aztec dancers, a Candy Dance for the kids and Native American food and crafts.
Admission costs $4 per day for anyone over 60 years and for children between 5 and 10 years, free for children under five, and $6 per day for everyone else.
