Natural medicines, from seed to salve
DAMASCUS, PA There will be an herb garden tour and medicine-making workshop from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8 at Conklin Hill Gardens. This walk/workshop, led by Nathaniel Whitmore, will guide participants through the steps of making herbal medicines.
Whitmore is a local herbalist who is well known for his knowledge of plants and mushrooms. His teaching generally focuses on the identification, harvesting and preparation of plants and mushrooms for use as food and medicine. This walk at Conklin Hill Gardens will be somewhat unusual for Whitmore, who normally leads walks in wild natural areas, and will be an opportunity to learn about herbs that can be cultivated in our area.
Types of medicinal preparation covered will include teas (infusions and decoctions), tinctures, cough syrups, salves and ointments, and poultices. It is easy to make such preparations for home-care use.
The cost of the workshop is $10.
