Family day to be celebrated at Dorflinger
WHITE MILLS, PA On Saturday, August 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary will host an outdoor family day on the sanctuary grounds along with an open house at the Dorflinger Glass Museum and several special art exhibits.
The event features a juried craft show with vendors selling their wares, kids games and activities, such as bobbing for apples and sack races, and entertainment. Organizations with information booths will include the Butterfly Barn, Wayne County Libraries and the Pennsylvania Environmental Education Center.
Volunteers from the sanctuary and the Honesdale Rotary Club will sell hot dogs, hamburgers, home-made desserts, cotton candy and fresh made popcorn. Proceeds from the Rotarians root beer sales will be used to support the Rotary groups community programs.
Demonstrations of old-world crafts such as wool spinning and weaving and other activities will take place throughout the day. A special program by Frank Littlebear, a Native American from the Cree Nation, is scheduled from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Littlebear will arrive by canoe and perform an interactive program of Indian music and dance.
In the village of White Mills, the 1867 Glassworkers House on Charles Street will be open for tours, and the historic 1911 firehouse on Route 6 will feature a special exhibit of photographs of White Mills taken by photographer John Van Horn. Both will be open from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The Dorflinger Glass Museum and the workers house will be open to the public free of charge for the day.
Paintings by members of the Come Paint With Me group will be on exhibit in the Blough building at the sanctuary from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public, with plenty of free parking on the premises.
The sanctuary is located on Long Ridge Road between Hawley and Honesdale.
