CAROL A. ALLEN

Carol A. Allen of Forestburgh, NY, a lifelong area resident and self-employed restaurant operator, passed away at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY on Saturday, July 7, 2007. She was 68.

The daughter of the late Elmer and Alice Reynolds Hemmer, she was born March 16, 1939 in Monticello, NY.

She is survived by a son, Donald F. Allen of Dunmore, PA; a daughter, Karri Theis and husband Brad of Bethel, NY; a sister, Arlyn Miller of Bangor, ME; four grandchildren; her companion, Patrick Everett; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald F. Allen; her stepfather, Louis Raiten; and her brother, Elmer Hemmer.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Ramsay’s Funeral Home. The Rev. Roy Shaffer officiated. Burial was made in Rock Ridge Cemetery, Monticello.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.


JOSEPH H. CLARK

Joseph H. Clark of Lake Ariel, PA, former resident of Lackawaxen, PA for 49 years, died on July 13, 2007. He was 85.

The son of the late Mary Kestler and William F. Clark, he was born in Lackawaxen.

Joseph was married to the late Eva G. (Ernst) Clark, who died in 1995, for 47 years. He was a construction laborer who retired in 1994. He was also a chicken farmer in Pike County for many years. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He was a member of St Ann’s RC Church, Shohola, PA and a member of the Laborers’ Local #158, Harrisburg, PA.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Balmer of Hawley, PA; a granddaughter, Kathleen Conklin of Lackawaxen; a sister, Patricia McKean of Clarksville, VA; twin great-granddaughters, Alora and Alayna; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased in death by two sisters, Bertha Gemp and Gertrude Christian; and four brothers, Bernard, William, Thomas and Mickey.

Funeral services were held at BVM Queen Of Peace Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 18, 2007. The Reverend Richard W. Beck, pastor, officiated. Private cremation was held at the Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.

FRANK CHARLES KOLB

Frank Charles Kolb of Beach Lake, PA died suddenly on July 11, 2007 at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, PA. He was 83.

The son of the late Joseph and Mary Holzli Kolb, he was born on March 5, 1924 in New York City.

Frank was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II from 1944 to 1946 in France, where he was wounded. He moved to Wayne County in 1968, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing and became a familiar face at flea markets and auctions. He was of the Catholic faith. Frank will be remembered as a beloved uncle, cousin and friend.

He is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and John Kolb; and sisters, Helen Petito and Mary Castaldo.

As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill Crematory in Archbald. A memorial service and burial will be held at the family’s convenience.


EARL MICKEL

Earl Mickel of Beach Lake, PA died on Thursday, July 12, 2007 after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 69.

The son of the late Edson and Laura Harloe Mickel, he was born in Hamlin, PA on July 2, 1938.

Earl graduated from Lake Ariel High School, class of 1956, and then served four years of service with the U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska. It was there he met and married his wife Janene, on January 2, 1959 in the then territory of Alaska. Alaska became a state at midnight, January 3, 1959 and Earl liked to say they might have been the last couple married in the territory. He worked as a U.S. postal mail carrier for seven years, then as a real estate salesman, owning his own business, Tongass Realty, with partner Walt Bolling. In 1982, he and Janene moved to Beach Lake. Always a hunter, it was at this time his interest in the wild turkey began to grow. He was the author of three books on turkey calls and call makers. He was considered the expert on that subject and owned a unique collection of over 5,000 turkey calls.

He is survived by his wife, Janene; daughter Robin Zink and husband Don of Ketchikan, AK; Guy Mickel and wife Helen of Kitchikan, AK; and Kyle Mickel and wife Sarah of Beach Lake; eight grandchildren, Caleb, Janene, Molly, Klie, Sam and Max Mickel and Jaime and Jessie Zink; two brothers, Laverne and wife Nancy of Bound Brook, NJ, and Jerry and his wife Ginny of Savannah, MO.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Janet Merring, Judy Mickel and Bonnie Mickel.

At Earl’s request, a private family service will be held at the family’s convenience.

DOUGLAS CRAIG WALKER

Douglas Craig Walker of New York City, vice president and senior editorial director of Scholastic Inc., lost his battle with cancer on July 1, 2007. He was 63.

He was a 1962 graduate of Raytown High School and honored in 2005 with induction into the Alumni Hall of Fame. He received his BA and Masters in Education from the University of Missouri at Columbia with studies at the University Redding in England. After his military service, he joined Hallmark Cards as senior editor, then managing editor at Lar Publications. He joined Scholastic Inc. in 1983 as assistant editor of See Saw Book Club, and his nearly 25-year legacy includes the Magic School Bus Series, Goosebumps, the Babysitters Club, “The Read and Learn Bible” and countless other books and series as he left an enduring mark on the children’s book industry.

He is survived by his partner, Robert Paulsen; mother Mary Bivins of Columbus, OH; brothers Brian Walker (Madeline) of Kansas City, MO, William Bivins (Eva) of Fredrick, MD; sister Vanessa Stewart (Ric) of Columbus, OH; nephews Nicholas Walker and Bradley Bivins; nieces Lydia and Jasmine Stewart and Brandy Bivins.

A family memorial will be held on Sunday, July 22, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 31 Erie Street, Narrowsburg, NY. A scholastic memorial in September is to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
