Hot Tuna Electric plugs into Electric City
LAKE ARIEL, PA PocoNotes will present Hot Tuna Electric at The Mellow Theater at Lackawanna College in Scranton on Tuesday, July 24.
The idea for PocoNotes was conceived on September 11, 2001, as Pat Harper, one of its co-founders, made his way out of Tower 2 of the World Trade Center. It was then that he decided to spend the second half of his life doing something to make the world a better place. He founded PocoNotes, an organization dedicated to creating one memorable musical event at a time in beautiful Northeastern Pennsylvania, an area that he and his partner, Dolores Hippler, call home. Its launch event, From NOLA To NEPA, was held as a benefit concert to raise the funds and awareness needed to help New Orleans musicians recover from the crippling effects of Hurricane Katrina.
Hot Tuna was formed over 35 years ago by Grammy-nominated Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, two of the founding members of The Jefferson Airplane and friends since childhood. Kaukonen and Casady have recorded dozens of CDs together and separately over the past four decades. The most recent of these, Stars in My Crown, was released by Kaukonen earlier this year. They are joined on this tour by Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin and Erik Diaz on drums and are performing as Hot Tuna Electric, which simply could not be more suited for Scrantons own historic reputation as The Electric City.
The Mellow Theater is a lovingly restored venue that PocoNotes has often referred to as Beacon Theater... West. The theater, a hidden gem with stunning acoustics, is housed in a century-old building that was once Central High School, now home to Lackawanna College.
