CALLICOON, NY ? Playing on their home course, Sullivan West’s top three golfers came through with good first-day performances at the Section Nine tournament held at the Villa Roma on May 21.

Ben Kleiner led the group with a seven-over-par 78, thereby making the cut set at 83. He was slated to join teammates Justin Armstrong (79) and Kenny Rhodes (83) on the greens at Wiltwyck Golf and Country Club for the final round on May 22.

Liberty’s Josh Goldstein (80) will also be there with hopes of getting back to the state tournament. Goldstein finished 11th in last year’s states. The leaderboard was topped by Rondout Valley’s Chris DeForest with a four-over-par 75. He was tied with Chapel Field’s Scott Wheeler at the end of the first day’s competition.

The top 20 finishers and ties move on to the next round. The top nine finishers of that round will advance to the states.
