Season opens for Lacawac tours

LAKE WALLENPAUPACK, PA — Tours of Lacawac sanctuary open in May for the season, at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays and Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. The tour covers both indoors and outdoors. Led by a knowledgeable docent, participants visit a coal baron’s Adirondack-style country lodge, view a forerunner of a refrigerator and learn about the system that put the ice where it would cool the best, and walk into a pantry as big as some bedrooms today. The tour also includes a walk around the grounds of the sanctuary, where they can catch a glimpse of its 52-acre glacial lake, spend time in its native plant garden, hear about Lacawac’s two deer exclosures and find out about the self-guided trails that they can return to on their own.

Reservations are not needed.
