Errol Flynn swashbuckler featured at Cinema 6
HONESDALE, PA There will be a screening of the classic 1938 film, The Adventures of Robin Hood, at Cinema Six on Monday, April 30 at 8:15 p.m. The show will be the fourth in the Wayne County Arts Alliances current series with a back to nature theme.
Starring Errol Flynn in perhaps his greatest swashbuckling role, the film tells the story of Robin Hoods efforts to raise a ransom from the rich to free his beloved king, Richard the Lion-Hearted, from the Austrians. Along the way, Robin enlists the help of Maid Marian (the beautiful Olivia de Havilland) and his band of merry men, including Little John (Alan Hale) and Friar Tuck (Eugene Palette), to fight off the evil Prince John (Claude Rains). Michael Curtiz, who later gave us Casablanca, directed this celebrated adventure film, whose lush, classic Erich Korngold score netted the legendary soundtrack composer his second Oscar. The film was also nominated for Best Picture Oscar and won Best Film Editing and Best Interior Decoration.
According to film critic Roger Ebert, This great 1938 film exists in an eternal summer of bravery and romance. We require no Freudian subtext, no revisionist analysis; it is enough that Robin wants to rob the rich, pay the poor and defend the Saxons not against all Normans, only the bad ones.
The film will be shown in recently-restored Technicolor. A donation of $5 is asked, to help support the activities of the Arts Alliance. The film will be preceded by a short introduction and followed by a discussion among audience members.
