EDWIN GODBY

Edwin “Bill” Godby, a lifelong resident of the area, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at his home. He was 83.

The son of the late Roy and Anna Keifer Godby, he was born February 10, 1924 in Newark, NJ. He married Anita Barnes Godby on September 8, 1962

Bill owned and operated his own outdoor maintenance/landscaping business for 28 years. Bill was a 51-year member of the Westfall Fire Department and a member of the Marsch-Kellog American Legion Post #139, Milford, PA. Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea. He earned numerous commendations during his service, including the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, European African Theatre Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He is survived by his wife at home, Anita Barnes Godby; one daughter, Beth Koferl and her husband Bill of Matamoras, PA; one cousin, Janet Mogler and her husband Elmer of Cynthiana, KY; two sisters-in-law, Elsa Weber and husband George of Barryville, NY and Laurie Trotti and husband Bob Trotti of Livingston Manor, NY; three brothers-in-law, Alan Barnes of Lake Isabella, CA, Larry Barnes and his wife Sharon of Gouldsboro, ME and Art “Farmer” Barnes and his wife Sue of Barryville; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his faithful dog, Mixx.

Honoring Bill’s wishes, there will be no visitation or flowers. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be private.

CLARENCE WILLIS JAMES

Clarence Willis James, a lifelong resident of Hawley, PA, died April 4, 2007. He was 103.

The son of the late Floyd and Mary Jane Melvin James, he was born in White Hall Corners, Lackawaxen Township, PA.

Clarence was a retired supervisor for Farview State Prison. He was affiliated with the Hawley United Methodist Church. He was a founding member of the Central Volunteer Fire Department, Lackawaxen Township. He was a historian and a Delaware River Basin Committee member.

He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Bartz of East Stroudsburg, PA; a son, Donald James of Westcolang Lake, Hawley, seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his spouse, Lou Emma “Toots” (Holbert) James; a daughter, Betty Hooper; and four sisters, Mary Smith, Gertrude Martin, Edith Blackmore and Bertie Christiansen.

Funeral services were held at Teeters’ East Chapel on Saturday, April 7, 2007 with Rev. Martin L. Cox, Jr., Pastor, Hawley United Methodist Church.

HENRIETTA Y. KNAPP

Henrietta Y. Knapp of Narrowsburg, NY, a retired nurse for the Narrowsburg school and life long resident, died Thursday, April 5, 2007 at home.

The daughter of the late Miles L. and Elsie Heins Young, she was born in Damascus Township, PA.

Henrietta was married for 47 years to Charles E. Knapp Sr., who survives. A graduate of Damascus High School, she went on to study in New York at the St. Luke’s School of Nursing. After graduating, she returned to Wayne County and joined the staff of Wayne County Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse. She eventually became the school nurse for the Narrowsburg Central School District and retired after 20 years of service. Upon retirement, she devoted her free time to her family, dogs, crafts and volunteering for the American Red Cross Blood Services program. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross for 35 years, past matron and life member of Laurel Chapter #67 Order of Eastern Star, Waymart, PA. She was a life member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Narrowsburg and served as an organist for the congregation for over 40 years.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Charles E. Jr. of Narrowsburg; a daughter, Susan, and her significant other, Jeff Southerton, of Honesdale, PA.

She is predeceased by a son, David; brothers Miles L. Jr. and Henry J.; and a sister, Anna Marie Heins, all of whom died in infancy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg. Rev. Donald Beck officiated. Burial was in Glen Cove Cemetery, Narrowsburg.

REV. ELWOOD E. MATHER

Rev. Elwood E. Mather of Hawley, PA, formerly of Lake Ariel, PA, died March 28, 2007 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. He was 77. The son of the late Rev. Elwood Mather Sr. and the late Edna Crouse Mather, he was born in Violetsville, MD.

Pastor emeritus of Bethel Lutheran Church, Rowland, PA, he earned a BA in history from Nyack Missionary College, and a Masters of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, Springfield, IL. He served in churches in Beeville and Three Rivers, TX; Enfield, NH; New Milford, CT; Ridgewood, NY; Scranton, PA; Fort Lee, NJ; Palisades Park, NJ; Rowland; and was a Chaplain at the Brighten at Julia Ribaudo, Lake Ariel, PA. He was a member of the Northeastern Barbershop Chorus and was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, Rowland and St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pine Island, NY.

He is survived by his second wife, Bernice Mather of Hawley; sons Elwood III of Middletown, NY, Mark and wife Linda of Lindenhurst, NY, Craig Engvaldsen of Rowland, PA and Andrew and wife Kathleen of Sterling Heights, MI; daughters Edie Haughney of Washingtonville, NY, Jan and husband Herb Strunk of Bethany, PA and Beth and husband Tom Dowd, Hawley; sisters Margaret and husband Donald Einolf, Baltimore, MD, Josephine and husband Aubrey Lang of Williamstown, NJ, Carolyn and husband Lloyd Edwards of Glen Burnie, MD, and Sharlene and husband Chris Wiebking of Glen Burnie; brothers Thomas and wife Agnes of Glen Burnie and David and wife Sharon of Linthicom, MD; 16 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Elsie; a son, Earl; and a daughter, Claire.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 2, in the Bethel Lutheran Church, Rowland, with the Rev. Norman R. Beighley, Pastor, officiating. A second funeral service was held Monday, in St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pine Island, NY. Interment was at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Pine Island, NY.

MONNIEUR S. NICHOLAS

Monnieur S. “Monty” Nicholas of Daytona Beach, Fl, formerly of Cochecton, NY, beloved husband and father, entered into rest March 31, 2007 after a short illness. He was 71.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and a big fan of NASCAR racing. He was a past member of the Park Ridge, NJ fire department. His family will always remember him as a caring, loving husband and father who often lent a hand to those in need. He will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara, at home; six children, Deborah Heins of Mongaup Valley, NY, Darlene Balzano and husband James of Glen Wild, NY, Monty Nicholas and wife Penny of Daytona Beach, FL, Cindy Wagner and husband Christopher of Cochecton Center, NY, Christopher Nicholas of Arlington, VA and Jennifer Nicholas of Flagler Beach, FL; loving grandchildren Stephanie, Becky, Erica, Amy, Jessica, Brandon, Christopher, Mary, Billy, Jimmy and Charles; and several great grandchildren.

Cremation will be private. A memorial service was held on April 4, 2007 in Daytona Beach, FL.
