Awards Tri-Valley’s Tingley named TH-R coach of the year Bears senior John Merchant makes first team; Sullivan West’s Cappiello and Monticello’s Norman third team picks MIDDLETOWN, NY - As a fitting last hurrah to the recently concluded basketball team, the much-anticipated 2007 Sunday Record All-stars of the Times Herald-Record (TH-R) and the 2007 Coach of the Year have now been announced and had their names added to the annals of the 37-year- old distinction that dates back to 1970. Tri-Valley first year coach Brian Tingley wasted no time in catapulting himself and his team to notoriety. Tingley, this year’s Coach of the Year, guided his 22-2 team to Division V and Class C titles and won a regional game against Section One’s Alexander Hamilton, before falling one game shy of the state’s Final Four with a loss to Section 8’s Friend’s Academy.

Awards Ross wins Best Sports Coverage for second time in three years When it comes to recognizing great sports coverage NYPA knows best SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - Covering area sports in a thorough and captivating fashion is the agenda of Richard A. Ross, The River Reporter’s sports editor, who gives a new meaning to the phrase, “The Power of One.” This year, for the second time in the past three years, the New York Press Association confirmed its award for Best Sports Coverage on Ross and The River Reporter based on its perusal of papers from the months of May and November of 2006.

Football Two Sullivan West football players move to next level JEFFERSONVILLE, NY - John “Tank” Dertinger of the Sullivan West Bulldogs has made the decision to attend Division III Thiel College in Greenville, PA. He was also recruited by Utica, Mount Ida and Salisbury. Dertinger will be studying criminal justice. A four-year starter, Dertinger played two years as center/defensive tackle for Roscoe and was coached by Fred Ahart. He transferred to Sullivan West and played guard/defensive end for two years for coach Ron Bauer. He will be playing fullback for Thiel and will be coached by Jack Leipheimer. |
