It’s showtime

Wulff, Trump Jr. and van Put to deliver the first cast at Junction Pool on opening day

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum, in cooperation with the Roscoe (Trout Town USA), NY Chamber of Commerce, will host this year’s Opening Day of Trout Season and First Cast, at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 1.

Junction Pool is the merging point of the famed upper Beaverkill River and the Willowemoc Creek, which, when joined, become The Beaverkill River, considered the hallowed waters of all trout fishermen in the nation.

It is here that dry fly fishing in America was born and fathered by Theodore Gordon in the beginning of the last century. The fly fishing faithful return every year to celebrate Opening Day with grand fanfare, and witness a ceremonial first cast. This year, Joan Wulff, Donald Trump Jr. and Ed and Judy van Put will simultaneously deliver the first cast. Fly fishing celebrities, politicians and friends will meet on the banks of Junction Pool, swapping tips and stories while sipping a hot cup of coffee provided by local merchants in the area.

After First Cast, it’s official and another trout season begins. As in previous years, the Catskill Fly Fishing Center will serve Agnes van Put’s famous soup—but hungry anglers are advised to get there early, as van Put ran out at 2:00 p.m. last year after having served up over 250 cups. At the museum, visitors can view the new 2007 exhibits including Modern Material Fly Rods, Women In Fly Fishing, FBI (flies from British Isles) and the artwork of Michael Simon.

The opening celebrations will be preceded by the annual Fisherman’s Reunion Dinner at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, at The Rockland House.
