Ross garners third consecutive Golden Media Award
BCANY honor accorded for outstanding coverage of scholastic basketball
ENDICOTT, NY - For the third straight year, the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) selected Richard A. Ross, Sports Editor of The River Reporter as the recipient of the Golden Media Award for his far-reaching and insightful coverage of high school basketball.
Each year, Ross begins his coverage with an extensive pre-season roundup of area teams and then proceeds to cover games nearly every night of the season. While the coverage centers on teams in Sullivan County, it extends to Orange and Ulster counties.
Comprehensive stories and albums of pictures appear daily on www.riverreportersports.com, a website that has attracted nearly 400,000 accesses since its inception in September of 2005.
Ross intensifies his coverage once the Section 9 tournament begins and is literally camped out at the finals until the tournaments conclusion. Then its on to regional play to follow Section 9 teams. Ross winds up his basketball coverage at Glens Falls each year for the New York State Public High School Athletic Associations boys basketball championships, a weekend that results in his award-winning feature, LIVE from Glens Falls.
Last year, the New York Press Association (NYPA) accorded Ross a first-place award in his division for Best Sports Feature Photography and Best Sports Action Photography. The feature photos were taken at Glens Falls. The article earned a second-place award in Sports Feature Writing. This years story can be read in the March 22 issue of The River Reporter or on riverreportersports.com on the basketball page.
BCANY Hall of Fame member Dick ONeill, who coaches basketball at Monticello High School, nominated Ross for this years Golden Media Award.
