Registration open for rod-making school

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Registration is now open for a bamboo rod making school to be held by the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum (CFFCM) from June 23 to 27. This comprehensive class will cover every element of cane rod making from selecting culms to fitting the ferrule, grip and reel seat, enabling students to leave with their own split cane fly rod ready to finish.

This six-day course will be taught by some of America’s most respected rod makers and experienced instructors, including David Van Burgel, Kathy Scott and Art Port.

Space is limited, so early reservations are advised. Tuition ($1,350 for non CFFCM members and $1,200 for members; membership costs $35) includes all materials, tools, sleeping accommodations in on-premise bunkhouse, breakfast and lunch daily and all printed class documents. Classes are completed daily by 5:00 p.m., leaving ample time for evening fishing on Catskill rivers.

According to George Barnes, the godfather of cane rod making in America, “There is a great feeling catching a fish on one of the flies you tied. The greatest feeling, however, is catching and landing a fish on a bamboo rod you have made.”
