Critically acclaimed production comes to museum for one night only

HURLEYVILLE, NY — The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop will present an evening of “dessert theatre” featuring an award-winning performance of Donald Steele’s one-act play, “A Personal Appearance.” The short play (running time is just under one hour) will be performed at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31 at the Sullivan County Museum, and dessert will be served.

Last season, the production was chosen from shows performed by over 30 community theatre groups across New York State to be performed at the Theatre Association of New York State (TANYS) Festival in November. Competing with eight community theatre companies at the TANYS Festival, “A Personal Appearance” received the honor of winning for “best short production” and will be going on to Ephrata, PA in April, where it will represent New York State and compete with productions from Community Theatre companies in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, DC and Pennsylvania at the Eastern States Theatre Association (ESTA) Festival.

“A Personal Appearance” is the story of a recently retired, world-class opera diva, Elyse Edelman (Cass Collins of Narrowsburg) who has been a stellar success at everything in her life—except in the relationship with her estranged son, David (Tom DelFavero of Livingston Manor), now a journalist. Elyse has come to Grand Rapids, MI to try and persuade her son to collaborate on writing her memoirs. But David wants no part of a mother he feels always put her career first.

The play is directed by Lori Schneider-Wendt of Hurleyville and stage-managed by Jim Schmidt, also of Hurleyville.

Admission costs $5, including dessert. All proceeds will help to offset the cost of taking the production to the ESTA Festival in April.
