The ice (finally) cometh

UPPER DELAWARE RIVER VALLEY — Last week for the first time this winter the slushy surface ice known as “frazil ice” appeared on the Delaware River, as seen in this photo taken just north of Skinner’s Falls. Sometimes this ice appears as early as November, but more typically in mid to late December. According to Ed Wesely, in 24 years of observation it has never before appeared as late as the end of January, nor has the Big Eddy ever before in his experience been able to support boats rather than ice fishermen this late.
