Winter water skiing on Lake Huntington

Balmy weather inspires winter water glide by local resident

By RICHARD A. ROSS

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY ¾ It certainly wasn’t the first out of the ordinary thing that Billy Boucher Jr. of Lake Huntington has ever done. But with the weather in the 60s on January 6, Boucher got the bright idea to go water skiing as he was sitting in the Lakeside Cafe drinking his morning cup of coffee.

One phone call to his buddy Mike Maas of the Lake Huntington Garage was all it took, and the team of Mad Mike and Wild Bill had it all lined up.

All they needed was Mike’s boat, Mike’s wife Mireille to act as a spotter, a wet suit and plenty of nerve.

Oh yeah, they also needed this writer to prove by way of his photograph that this stunt actually took place because despite the warmth of the air, the water in placid Lake Huntington was a severe 38 degrees.

Bethel sewer funds down the drain

Hinchey blames Congressional Republicans

By FRITZ MAYER

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Maurice Hinchey blasted Republicans in Washington for inaction that will cost his district some $12.44 million in funding, including $1 million to help pay for construction of the sewer extension in Bethel, NY.

On January 8, Hinchey issued a press release that said the funds disappeared because Congress, which until January was controlled by Republicans, failed to pass 9 of the 11 spending bills that are required each year to keep the government operating.

Warm winter weather again this year

El Niño gets much of the credit

By FRITZ MAYER

RIVER VALLEY—It’s January and that should mean it’s time to break out the snowmobiles. But this year, like last year, winter is warmer than usual, with local daytime highs in the 50s and 60s, instead of hovering in the 20s and 30s. Records are being shattered all across the Northeast.

On Saturday, January 6, the temperature in Monticello, NY was 62 degrees, as it was in Honesdale, PA. In New York City’s Central Park, the mercury climbed to an astonishing 72 degrees.
