Developmental meets get underway at SCCC

Field house provides a venue for track athletes to hone skills and quicken their pace

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY - Tri-Valley’s track coach and athletic director gathered the massive number of indoor track athletes from local schools on January 3 and preached safety, safety and more safety prior to this year’s developmental track meets slated for Sullivan County Community College.

Following a mishap last February 7 wherein an errant toss of a 25-pound weight resulted in the injury of a bystander who had her back turned to the event, caution and attentiveness has been raised to the maximum.

The weight throwing is now staged prior to the rest of the events. Athletes from Liberty, Sullivan West, Eldred, Monticello, Tri-Valley, Fallsburg and Ellenville used the one-and-a-half hour meet to get in shape for the meets that count, including relays held at West Point on January 4 and the upcoming league and sectional meets later this month.

No results are made public as coaches and their teams are privy to that information as a means of keeping track of each athlete’s progress.

Peppered among the more notable local track icons were a number of modified runners and other track team members, some of whom did not compete in the new format of the West Point Invitationals, which limits the number of entrants per school in each event.

The meet went off without a hitch and despite its tardy start, finished on time.

Two more meets are slated for January 9 and 11.
