Two new stores in Narrowsburg

Nest and Enochian

NARROWSBURG, NY — With Christmas shopping on the minds of most people these days, two new shops have opened their doors on Main Street.

A store called Nest opened in the Narrowsburg Mews building on December 6, but the proprietors said they’ve been planning for the opening since they signed the lease in April.

Kevin Penford described the store as “something of a modern-day general store, with clothing, books, gifts and curiosities.”

Penford’s wife, Anna Bern-Penford, added that it’s a “lifestyle” store with everything from bed and bath to toys.

The couple has been traveling to the area for some time, and settled here full time two months ago. They have bought a house in Narrowsburg and will move into it once renovations are complete. In their previous lives in New York City, Bern-Penford was a design director for Vogue advertising, and Penford managed photographers.

The store is now operating with a 30-day permit because some finishing touches need to be added to the store and building.

Enochian

Across Main Street and several doors down, in the space that formerly housed Kizmet, a store called Enochian opened three weeks ago. The proprietor, Pamela Mayer, said the name means “language of the angels.”

With her husband Karl Wasner, Mayer has run her clothing design business from Narrowsburg since 1998. When Kizmet moved out of its storefront, Mayer decided to open a retail space there, and for the first time sell her creations, and those of other designers, directly to the public.

The store features the work of six designers and includes jackets, skirts, shoes, slippers and other women’s apparel. The most expensive item in the store is a $300 leather jacket that Mayer said would sell for a retail price of $1,500 in the city. On the lower end of the scale, cashmere socks are priced from $12 to $18.

Mayer maintains a showroom in Manhattan, and most of her garments are manufactured there, although she still works on a few items in her studio here. She said her fabrics come mostly from Italy, Germany and France. She described her clothes as “comfy luxury.”
