A tribute to a fallen hero

By TINA AUGELLO

Each year the Wallenpaupack North Primary and North Intermediate schools perform a Veteran’s Day Program to honor all the veterans who have served in the military. This year the schools will dedicate the Veterans Day program not only to a student, but a fallen hero.

There was a young man who lived in Lackawaxen, PA all his short life. His name was Jacob Walter Beisel. After 9/11 Jacob wanted to make a difference. Upon graduating from Wallenpaupack in 2003, Jacob joined the Marines, where he became a lieutenant corporal. His motive was to fight for justice, liberty and freedom—freedom that many of us take for granted. It was with Jacob’s heart that he pledged allegiance to the flag, and it was a bullet through his heart that took his life.

Jacob left behind a very large and loving family. There are many of us who work for the Wallenpaupack school district and I, for one, work in the North Primary. I am one of Jacob’s aunts. It’s a great honor to our family to have each school dedicate the Veterans Day Program to Jacob and the other veterans who serve or have served in the military.

The motive behind the Veterans Day program is to honor those men and women of the armed forces who shed their blood, gave up their limbs and or made the ultimate sacrifice—their lives.

Jacob will always be loved and missed. But if it weren’t for the brave men and women like Jacob we wouldn’t live in the land of the free.

The purpose of this letter is to say “thank you” to Jacob and all the military men and women of the United States of America. How proud I am to know that the armed forces are working overtime in keeping us safe at home.

Most people do not know what the 21-gun salute stands for at a military funeral. It stands for the sum of the numbers in the year of 1776 (1+7+7+6=21). LCPL Jacob Walter Beisel was 21 years old when he died in Anbar Province, Iraq, on March 31.

God Bless America!
