Election Results in Pennsylvania and New York

PENNSYLVANIA & NEW YORK — The race for the governor’s office in New York turned out as expected with Democrat Eliot Spitzer beating Republican John Faso by a very comfortable margin of about 69 to 29 percent.

The contest for lieutenant governor followed suit, with Democrat David Paterson, who ran on the ticket with Spitzer, pulling in far more votes than his his Republican opponent C. Scott Vanderhoef.

Comptroller Alan Hevesi, a Democrat whose campaign for reelection was damaged by the revelation that Hevesi improperly used a state employee to chauffer his ailing wife, still beat his republican opponent Christopher Callaghan by about 56 percent to 38 percent.

Democrat Andrew Cuomo was victorious in his battle with Republican Jeanine Pirro in the race for attorney general, by a margin of about 58 percent to 40 pcercent.

In the U.S. Senate race, Democrat Hillary Clinton, as expected, bested Republican John Spencer with nearly 70 percent of the vote.

Both Congressman Maurice Hinchey and state Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther ran unopposed and were elected to another term of office.

In the state senate seat between Republican John Bonacic, the incumbent, and Democratic challenger Susan Zimet, Bonacic emerged the winner with a comforable margin.

In local races, Judge Frank Labuda, a Democrat, ran unopposed.

In the Town of Bethel, Andy LaPolt, who ran on the Republican and Conservative line, beat Ted Yeomans, who ran on the Democratic and Open Door lines, to fill a vacant seat on the town board. The unnofical vote was 674 to 579.

In the Town of Delaware, the race for a board seat went to Democrat Kara McElroy who beat Republican Alice Schlichting, by a margin of 447 to 187.

There were three candidates for the vacant council seat in the Town of Liberty. Clarence Barber Jr. who ran on the Democratic line came in first, followed by Gary Siegel, who ran on the Republican and Independent lines, and John Wombacher who ran on the Liberty line. The unifficial totals were Barber Jr. 1073, Siegel 802 and Wombacher 72.

In the Town of Thompson, the race for the vacant seat went to Moniquka Diaz Corley on the Democratic and Conservative lines, followed by Janet Newberg on the Republican and People’s Choice line, and Michael Bernstein on the Equal Justice line.

At the county level, Elwin Wood, who replaced Greg Goldstein when Goldstein became the supervisor of Neversink, who ran on the Democratic and Working families lines appeared to be the winner at press time, He ran against Patrick O. Casey, who was on the Republican, Conservative and Independent lines, to represent district three of the Sullivan County Legislature, which includes Livingston Manor and Roscoe. Absentee ballots remained to be counted.

PENNSYLVANIA

Democrat incumbent Governor Ed Rendell will be serving another term after winning the race against Republican Lynn Swann by a margin of about 59 to 41 percent.

In the senate race, Republican incumbent Rick Santorum lost to Democrat Bob Casey, Jr. The margin was about 59 to 41 percent.

In the congressional race, incumbent Republican Don Sherwood, whose campaigned was marred by revelations involving an extramarital affair, was beaten by Democrat Chris Carney by a margin of about 53 to 47 percent.

In the contest for the state senate, Republican Lisa Baker was victorious over Democrat Robert McNamara.

Republican state Assemblyman Michael Peifer, who was unopposed, will be returning to Harrisburg for anther term.
