Callicoon Theatre upgrades projector
CALLICOON, NY New projector lenses have replaced the 50-year-old lenses at the Callicoon Theater, offering a brighter, clearer, better-defined image on the biggest screen in the region.
Lens quality degrades significantly over time, and half a century was more than enough time to adversely affect resolution and brightness, Jim Kayton said. Kayton and his wife, Barbara, have owned and operated the 58-year-old single-screen theater since 1986. Besides, computer technology to make a superior lens didnt exist 50 years ago. These new lenses, combined with our Dolby Digital sound and high-end speaker system, make movies magical; the screen positively glows, Kayton added.
In addition, a state-of-the-art film delivery system has been installed. Our old system used two projectors with film on multiple reels, requiring manual switching by employees several times during a show. The new system continuously feeds film through the projector, eliminating switching errors and significantly reducing the risk of breakdowns during a show, Kayton said.
Opened in 1948, the 380-seat Callicoon Theater is the oldest continuously operated cinema in Sullivan County. The theater has been voted Best Movie Theater in the region by moviegoers annually since 1996 and has been honored by the U.S. Congress, New York State Assembly, and the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce.
