Hawk-watch field trip
MILFORD, PA On Saturday, October 14, past president of the Greater Pennsylvania Audubon Society Peter Wulfhorst will lead a trip to Sunrise Mountain on the Kittatiny Ridge in New Jersey to watch migrating hawks.
Kittatinny Ridge runs northeast to southwest, and on days with northwest winds, it provides lift for the hawks on their migration. This helps hawks conserve their energy for their long upcoming flight.
In mid-October there is the greatest variety of hawks migrating south, including the sharp-shinned hawk, Coopers hawk, red-shouldered hawk, harriers and some late ospreys and American kestrels.
The group will meet at 9:00 a.m. at Milford Beach parking lot to car pool to Sunrise Mountain. It will stay at Sunrise Mountain for the morning and part of the afternoon. Please bring a lunch. The field trip is free and open to the public.
For more information call 570/296-2244 between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.
