Homecoming for two native-daughter artists at Liberty Museum

LIBERTY, NY — Liberty High School classmates Gilda Levenson Hecht and Linda Cook Ackerman have returned from their artistic wanderings to share the fruits of their work at the Liberty Museum in a show that runs through October 21. The two Liberty expatriates will share their passions and their pieces in a homecoming event on October 14 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the museum.

Hecht’s art quilts combine color, shape and texture in rhythmic textile canvases. Her wide breadth of experience and extensive studies in all types of needlework over the past 30 years are evident in her quilts.

Hecht’s passion for quilting started through her work with children. While working with third graders on a quilt, Hecht, a mother of five children herself, started to see the creative possibilities in quilting, and hasn’t stopped since.

Ackerman, one of Hecht’s classmates, started sculpting in 1995 and has created a body of work that breathes human emotion. Her realistic pieces, mostly busts, are so convincing, one forgets that they are terra cotta. Many of her forms speak to the female experience, “the radiant sisterhood,” as she calls it.

Admission is free.
