Lady Indians post their first win of the season

By RICHARD A. ROSS

LIBERTY, NY - Barring a tie, the good news about the October 5 tennis match between Liberty and Fallsburg was that one of the two teams would post its first win of the season.

As the round of singles and doubles matches unfolded, the victor was Liberty, which came into the fray on its home court against the Lady Comets with only a tie against James I. O’Neill to offset its seven prior losses. The Lady Comets were in search of either a win or a tie.

An atmosphere of friendly competition prevailed between the two teams that had traveled together to the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament this past summer.

Fallsburg’s team is comprised of players from Tri-Valley as well.

On court one, Bianca Rappaport of Fallsburg defeated Kate Sarno 6-1, 6-2 in singles. Liberty’s Ellyn Wingert evened it up for the Lady Indians by downing Fallsburg’s Esti Ross 7-5,7-2.

Liberty’s Jill Lieberman defeated Martine Baron 6-1, 6-1 and Fallsburg’s Patricia Singh won by a forfeit.

In doubles’ competition, Liberty won all of its matches, as Melissa Cohen and Maria Leguio defeated Heather Riordan and Lauren Walsh 6-1, 6-1. In subsequent doubles’ action, Danielle Hysler and Kyrstey Fernandez topped Samantha Vernooy and Kassandra Donahue 6-1,6-4. In the day’s final match, Lady Indians Elana Ehrenberg and Danielle Stricko defeated Danielle Huppke and Cheyenne Cali.

Liberty improved its record to 1-7-1 (1-0-1 MHAL), while Fallsburg’s record fell to 0-9 (0-6 MHAL).
