Williams classic comes to the Rivoli

SOUTH FALLSBURG, NY — The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop will present Tennessee Williams’ classic, “The Glass Menagerie,” for six performances in October at the Rivoli Theatre.

Premiering in 1945, this masterpiece established Tennessee Williams as a major American playwright. Under the capable direction of Sally Gladden of Woodridge, the play glimpses the Wingfield family’s struggle to exist in St. Louis amid The Great Depression years, with a story revealed through memory and haunted by an absent father. Amanda (Lori Schubeler of Callicoon), the matriarch of the family, is trying to maintain her dignity and provide for the future. Her son, Tom (Matthew Side of Mongaup Valley), has of necessity become the reluctant breadwinner after his father ran out on the family. His frail sister, Laura (Tanya Cohen of Jeffersonville), has retreated from the world’s harsh realities to a homebound life where she finds comfort in caring for her collection of little glass animals. Tension in the apartment mounts as Tom becomes so dissatisfied with working in a warehouse and Amanda’s constant demands that he recruits a prospective husband for Laura. The arrival of Jim, the “gentleman caller” (Tom DelFavero of Livingston Manor) could be a sign of hope or disturbance that will shatter their fragile lives.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, October 6, 7, 13, 14 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, October 8 and 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the fully heated Nartoff-Wells Auditorium of the Rivoli Theatre on Route 42. General admission is $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and students 16 and under.
