Local harriers state their case at Purple Mania

Invitational features state contenders in state meet preview

WARWICK, NY - In a unique opportunity to run against the state’s best while previewing the course for this year’s state meet, runners from Monticello, Tri-Valley, Sullivan West and Eldred took part in the Provident Bank Purple Wave Mania Invitational held on September 30.

Featuring state-ranked teams that included the boys from Class A Queensbury, ranked number one, Class C Pawling (3), Newark Valley (5) and Rhinebeck (7), along with Class D Delhi (1) and Port Jefferson (3), the meet challenged the county’s top male runners to test their mettle against some of the best.

Monticello’s Brendan Devine was the area’s top finisher, taking fourth place in the Division II boys race with a time of 15:44.6. Devine finished 15th in last year’s Class A state meet. Monticello took 17th place in the Division II race at Purple Mania.

The girls field was equally daunting, featuring such state-ranked notables as Class A Holy Names (1), Queensbury (3) and Class C Greenwich (3).

In the girls Division II race, Tri-Valley’s Courtney Roosa was Sullivan County’s top runner. Roosa took 29th place with a time of 19:44.7. Tri-Valley’s girls finished 13th in Division II.

In the Division III race, Sullivan West’s Rianne Erlwein took 30th place with a team-leading time of 20:24.5. Sullivan West garnered 14th place overall.
