FLOYD H. FREDERICKS

PORT JERVIS, NY — Floyd H. Fredericks, a resident of Port Jervis, died on Friday, September 22, 2006 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. He was 77.

The son of the late William T. and Jennie Ellen Mabee Fredericks, he was born on July 4, 1929 in Warwick.

Fredericks was a retired mechanic for Ford Motor Co. in Mahwah, NJ. He also worked for Altec Lansing (Sparkomatic), the Town of Deerpark, Suttons Garage and delivered newspapers for the Tri-State Area.

A family statement said: “Dad was a caring person. Whenever someone needed help he would be there for them. He will be sadly missed not just by his family and friends, but by his dogs, Bruce and Buddy. He was a member of the Three Pines Hunting Club and he loved to bowl.”

He is survived by two sons, Floyd Fredericks Jr. and his wife Barbara of Port Jervis, and Gene Fredericks of Port Jervis; one daughter, Teresa Aber and her husband Steven of Port Jervis; two brothers, Samuel Fredericks and his wife Virginia of Pond Eddy, and William Fredericks and his wife Phyllis of Eldred; two sisters-in-law, Joan Applegate of Sparrowbush and Rose Fredericks of Narrowsburg; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Conklin Fredericks; his sister, Dorothy Shaw; and his brother, Clifford Fredericks.

Services were held Tuesday, September 26, 2006 in the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis. The Reverend Nancy Vonderhorst officiated.

Interment is at Rural Valley Cemetery in Cuddebackville.

JOSEPHINE L. FURMAN

PORT JERVIS, NY — Josephine L. Furman, a resident of Port Jervis, died on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at the Taylor Care Center of Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. She was 86.

The daughter of the late Giovanni and Antonia Gilberti Delfino, she was born on May 28, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY.

Furman, a homemaker, was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Pond Eddy.

She is survived by three sons, John A. Gargiulo and his wife Wendy of Glen Spey, Neil Gargiulo and his wife Pamela of Bayshore, and Edward Gargiulo and his wife Rose of Weston, CT; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Services were held on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Inc. in Port Jervis. The Reverend Anthony Moore officiated.

Interment is at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale.


ARTHUR HILLRIEGEL

CALLICOON, NY—Arthur Hillriegel, a resident of Callicoon, died Monday, September 25, 2006 in Callicoon. He was 95.

The son of the late George and Anna Landeck Hillriegel, he was born on September 22, 1911 in Fremont.

Hillriegel, a lifetime area resident, was a retired dairy farmer and owner of Arthur Hillriegel and Sons Farm Equipment. He was a member of the Hortonville Grange, Hortonville Presbyterian Church and the Dairyman’s League.

A family statement said: “Arthur was an avid bowler, hunter, fisherman and camper who enjoyed the outdoors. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

He is survived by three sons, Robert and his wife Arlene of Fremont Center, James and his wife Anne of Wurtsboro, and Reginald and his wife Alberta of Callicoon; two daughters, Betty Friedenstine and her husband William of Fremont Center, and Ellen Kraft of Hankins; a brother, Lester of Callicoon; two sisters, Anna Duncan of Freeport, and Helen Simpson of Roscoe; 41 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Bestenheider Hillriegel; three brothers, Albert, George and Harold; a sister, Lillian Will; and two grandsons.

Services will be held Thursday, September 28 at the Hostonville Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Dennis Ubertini officiating.

Interment is at Hortonville Cemetery.

INEZ LOVELASS LAWSON

BALDWIN, NY—Inez Lovelass Lawson, a resident of Baldwin, NY, died Monday, September 11, 2006 at her home. She was 79.

The daughter of the late Harold and Cora Lovelass, she was born in Honesdale, PA.

Lawson attended the Calkins two-room school and Calkins Union Church. She received a Bachelors of Science Degree from Juanita College, and was a registered medical technologist at Meadowbrook and Mid-Island hospitals. She was a member of the S. Nassau Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Freeport, NY and was an active member of the board of trustees for many committees. She was also a volunteer at the Unitarian Thrift Shop and the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Freeport.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, at home; a son, Bruce of Milanville, PA; a daughter, Joyce Randall and her husband Michael; a daughter-in-law, Kim Hunter Lawson; three grandchildren; a sister, Vera Lovelass of Milanville and Freeport; and a brother, Lester.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale.


MERYL PIERCE

WALES — Meryl Pierce, a long-time resident of Shohola, PA, entered into rest on September 21, 2006 in her hometown of Merthyr-Tydfil, Wales, after fighting a valiant battle with lung cancer. Meryl succumbed to her battle with her mother and family by her side.

Meryl was born in Wales and immigrated to this county in the early ‘80s. She had one son, Justin, who predeceased her in July of 2000.

She had recently relocated to Florida, where she was first diagnosed with her illness. She loved Florida and was blessed with friends that cared for her and treated her like family. She had many friends in Shohola that came to her aid when they heard of her battle with cancer. A benefit in Meryl’s honor took place in Shohola in April, and it was evident that she touched many people in her short stay on this earth. She was even able at that time to sing her signature song, “House of the Rising Sun.” Those of us who knew Meryl loved her for her genuine caring, generosity and her wonderful sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by us all.

Survivors include her mother, Marie Deverux, brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2007 at St Jacobi in Shohola, PA.


EDWARD A. RETTY

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Edward A. Retty, a resident of Jeffersonville, died on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at home. He was 82.

The son of John and Anna Retty, he was born in Ramsey, NJ on June 3, 1924.

Retty retired from the Records Division of the United Nations in New York City. He was a charter member of the Upper Saddle River New Jersey Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, as well as a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 962 in Ramsey, NJ. He was also a member of the Sullivan County Coonhound Association.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma “Mitzi” Retty at home; one daughter, Gail Hallfors of Jeffersonville; one son, Wayne Retty and his wife Karen of Florida; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were held Friday, September 22, 2006 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville with the Reverend Robert Hoag officiating.

OLGA A. (PETERSEN) ROCHE

HONESDALE, PA — Olga A. (Petersen) Roche, a resident of Wayne Woodlands and former resident of Beach Lake, died on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was 87.

The daughter of the late Alvinus and Olga Pohle Petersen, she was born on September 29, 1918 in Scranton.

Roche spent much of her childhood on the family farm in Laurella. She was a graduate of Honesdale High School and received her Registered Nurse degree from Hahnemann Hospital in Scranton. She worked as a private duty nurse, and later became a homemaker. A well-known baker, she was known for her cookies and pies, which she distributed to the community. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Church.

She is survived by her son, Robert and his wife Sally of Honesdale; and a daughter, Evelyn Monaghan and her husband F.J. of Honesdale; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a niece, Ginny Davitt.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas H.E. Roche; two sisters, Majorie Fritz and Camilla Davitt; and brother-in-law, Robert Fritz.

Services will be held Friday, September 29, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hessling Funeral Home with the Reverend Ken Buckwalter of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating.

Interment is at Lutheran Cemetery.


BENJAMIN RYAN MELAND SANTIAGO

GREENVILLE, NY — Benjamin Ryan Meland Santiago, of the Town of Greenville, died Thursday, September 21, 2006 at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

The son of Benjamin Santiago and Tammy Meland, he was born on September 21, 2006 in Valhalla.

He is survived by his parents, Benjamin Santiago of Otisville and Tammy Meland of Greenville; three sisters, Claudia, Deja and Kayla; his maternal grandparents, Viola and Johannes Meland of Greenville and Joseph Teller of Pond Eddy; and his paternal grandmother, Marcia Guardia of Stormville.

He was predeceased by his grandfather, Jose A. Santiago; and his sister, Faith.

Services were held on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Middletown.


RENEE MERCURIO SCHIMMEL

BAYSIDE, NY — Renee Mercurio Schimmel, a former resident of Barryville and Ardsley, died on Friday, September 22, 2006. She was 56.

The daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Maxwell) Sanabria, she was born on July 14, 1950.

Schimmel was the owner and operator of The Bridge Bar and Restaurant in Barryville. She enjoyed cooking.

She is survived by her husband, David Schimmel; two sons, Joseph and Matthew Mercurio; her former husband, Joseph Mercurio; one granddaughter; and David’s children, Jacqueline, Stephanie, Alexandra, Zachary and Samantha.

Services were on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry.

JOHN H. SCHMITT

SPARROWBUSH, NY — John H. Schmitt, a resident of Sparrowbush, died on Friday, September 22, 2006 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. Hr was 79.

The son of the late Frederick H. and Anna M. Brown Schmitt, he was born on February 7, 1927 in Poughkeepsie.

Schmitt was a security guard at Orange County Community College in Middletown and Kolmar Labs in Port Jervis. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War and was a member of the Roosa-Fleming VFW Post Number 161 and the James C. Blitz American Legion post number 685, both of Port Jervis.

He is survived by his wife, Alvina C. Thomas Schmitt at home; a brother, Frederick H. Schnitt of Palisades Park, NJ; and one grandson.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Nancy E. McMaster.

Services were held on Monday, September 25, 2006 at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis with the Reverend Robert D, Cassidy officiating.

Interment is at Fairmount Cemetery, Weymouth, MA.


JULIA TKACH

SPARROWBUSH, NY—Julia Tkach, a resident of Sparrowbush, died on Friday, September 22, 2006 at Bon Secours Community Hospital of Port Jervis. She was 86.

The daughter of the late Peter and Eva Rozum Tkach, she was born on November 29, 1919 in Yonkers.

She is survived by her brother, Michael Tkach; and a sister, Helen Tkach of Cobleskill; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Praslick and Anne Tkach.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Interment is at the Rural Valley Cemetery in Cuddebackville.


ADELAIDE HESS RIDER

YULAN, NY — Adelaide Hess Rider, a resident of Yulan, died this past weekend. She was 83.

The daughter of the late John and Kathryn Fickieson Hess, she was born in Shohola, PA on July 15, 1923.

Rider was a retired worker from Kolmar, as well as a retired secretary from Ready Mix Sand & Gravel, and she was also a homemaker. She was a member of the Barryville United Methodist Church, a member of the Barryville Historical Society, a member of the Yulan Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Eastern Star, Lake Kiamesha Chapter.

A family statement said: “The family remembers Addie as a loving and caring mother and grandmother with a sharp intelligence and wit along with a great sense of fashion. She had a sense of adventure and taught the family dedication to excellence along with Christian values and spirituality. Addie always had a positive attitude about family and the future. She will be missed by her family and community.”

She is survived by three sons, Edward Rider Jr. of Slate Hill, Gene Rider of Naperville, IL and Gordon Rider of Scottsburg, IN; one daughter, Vickie Rider Foy of Newtown, CT; one sister, Evelyn Thompson of Greely, PA; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, John Hess.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at the Barryville United Methodist Church with the Reverend Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.

Interment is at McKean Valley Cemetery in Shohola.

ELSIE BONHARD LECHNER

NARROWSBURG, NY—Elsie Bonhard Lechner, a resident of Narrowsburg, died Monday, September 25, 2006 at Osprey Ridge Healthcare Center in Carbondale, PA. She was 92.

Services will be on September 29, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg with the Reverend Donald Beck officiating.

Interment is at Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg.
