It’s a small world at the Von Steuben Day parade

YULAN, NY — Despite somewhat iffy weather, this year’s Von Steuben Day Parade and Germanfest, on September 23, was as big a success as ever. Emblematic of the event, which takes German culture as its theme but brings together performers and spectators from all over the state and from a rainbow of ethnic heritages, was the winning float, “It’s a Small World.” The timely celebration of international amity was conceived of and created by children under the aegis of the Circle Park Committee.

German dancing by the Schuplatter Folk, the fire department’s beer booth, an abundance of wursts and other German delicacies and a smattering of traditional costumes made for plenty of distinctively German ethnic flavor. As always, the event gave a boost to local businesses and vendors, who said they were as busy or busier than last year, despite less favorable weather—the Eldred Preserve, for instance, reported doing a gangbuster business in sauerbraten.
