Monticello’s Devine and Tri-Valley’s Roosa are victorious harriers

Monticello, Chester, Goshen, Tri-Valley, Minisink Valley and S.S. Seward compete at annual fall classic

MONTICELLO, NY - The thundering herd of runners in the boys race at Monticello High School was barely down the first rise from the school and on their way around the outside of the track as Monticello’s Brendan Devine pulled out into the lead.

The distance between Devine, who is one of Section Nine’s premiere runners, and the rest of the pack continued to widen on the new course designed by Monticello coach Pete Wysochanski. Devine, who finished 15th in the Class A state meet last year at Queensbury, set a new course record with a blistering 15:36.9 in the 3.1 mile run.

Running behind Devine was a pack of runners, including Matt Koennecke of Goshen (16:21.5), teammate Zach Grier (17:13.4) and Tri-Valley’s Michael Kaplan (17:20). Cory Quimby (17:21.8) of Minisink Valley rounded out the top five.

Other Sullivan County runners with top 20 performances included Tri-Valley’s Tom Riordan (17:39.9), seventh, Brendan Ference of Monticello (17:56.8), eighth, Nick Denman of Tri-Valley (17:59.6), ninth, James Dzurica of Monticello (18:02.8), 10th, Robert Lenditti of Monticello (18:15), 12th, John Bowen of Monticello (18:18.5), 13th, Justin Tompkins of Tri-Valley (18:50) and Mike Rouman of Tri-Valley (19:21), 17th.

In the girls race, Tri-Valley’s Courtney Roosa (19:39) finished first ahead of teammate Rachel Sanborn (20:09). Monticello’s Emma Cohen ran with the two leaders and finished third in 20:21. Tri-Valley’s Shannon Hornbeck (20:35) finished fourth, Monticello’s Marisela Acevedo (21:16) was fifth and Kathryn Schneyer of Tri-Valley (21:41) finished sixth. Rounding out the rest of the top 10 were Goshen’s Nicole Johnson (21:55), who finished seventh, Tri-Valley’s Naomi Weise (22:11) who finished eighth, Kristine Dodge (22:37) of Goshen in ninth place and Caroline Bertholf of Tri-Valley (22:50), who finished 10th.

Other Sullivan County runners in the top 20 included Rebecca Concors of Monticello (23:01), who finished in 11th place, and Jessica Fingers of Monticello (23:14), who finished 14th.

Team records as a result of the many dual meet scores were as follows:

Boys: Chester 0-5 (0-2 OCIAA Division V), Goshen 5-0, (1-0 OCIAA Division III), Minisink Valley 2-3 (0-0 OCIAA Division II), Monticello 4-1 (0-1 OCIAA Division III), S.S. Seward 1-4 (1-1 OCIAA Division V), Tri-Valley 3-2 (2-0 OCIAA Division V).

Girls: Chester 0-4 (0-1 OCIAA Division V), Goshen 3-2 (0-1 OCIAA Division III), Minisink Valley 2-3 (0-0 OCIAA Division II), Monticello 5-0 (1-0 OCIAA Division III), S.S. Seward 0-4 (0-1 OCIAA Division V), Tri-Valley 4-1 (2-0 OCIAA Division V).

Eldred’s Gunther and Sullivan West’s Erlwein take first at Liberty meet

LIBERTY, NY - Liberty hosted a dual meet featuring Sullivan West, John S. Burke Catholic, Eldred and Livingston Manor on September 12. In the boys meet, Eldred’s Max Gunther (16:25) took first. He was followed by Sullivan West’s Matt Layman (16:49) and Barett Cucci (17:23). Rounding out the top five were Greg Lewis (18:20) of Livingston Manor and Greg Bruschett (18:21) of John S. Burke Catholic.

Boys team records as a result of the meet were as follows: John S. Burke Catholic 4-0, Eldred 3-1, Sullivan West 2-2, Livingston Manor 1-3 and Liberty 0-4.

In the girls meet, Sullivan West’s Rianne Erlwein (20:04) took first place. She was followed by Jen Greene (20:47) of Livingston Manor and Charlotte Peters (21:09) of Sullivan West. Rounding out the rest of the top five was Kim McKay (21:10) of Liberty.

Girls team records were as follows: Sullivan West 4-0, Eldred 3-1, John S. Burke Catholic 2-2, Livingston Manor 0-3 and Liberty 0-3.
