Yellowjackets dominate LMR in non-league fray

ELDRED, NY — According to Eldred coach Frank Kean, quarterback Nick McCormick had the best game of his career as he scored three touchdowns in Eldred’s 40-0 torching of Division V rival LMR in a non-league match.

Eldred showed dominance early and often. McCormick rushed 10 times for 164 yards by game’s end. Eldred scored three touchdowns (TD) in the first quarter; the first one fueled by a bad snap from LMR’s center on a punting attempt. LMR went from the Devilcats’ 27 in eight plays as Tom Compasso scored on a one-yard run. Phil Talley kicked the PAT.

Kevin Prunka added a three-yard score on Eldred’s next series and McCormick completed an 18-yard pass to Kojo Williams for the third strike. Talley remained perfect on PAT’s and Eldred led 21-0 at the half.

Hilton Johnson and Prunka kept the chains moving and McCormick scored his second TD on a 25-yard run in the second quarter. He also ran for a 15-yard jaunt and gave Eldred a 33-0 lead at the half.

McCormick completed five of eight passes for 65 yards. McCormick’s final TD was a 10-yard run in the third quarter.

Prunka rushed for 67 yards on 10 carries, while Johnson gained 53 yards on 10 carries for Eldred.

Eldred (2-0) faces Chester (2-0) at home for a non-league thriller on September 16. Eldred beat Chester for the Division V title and the Section 9 title in 2005.

LMR (0-2) will host Sullivan West (0-2) in Livingston Manor on September 16.

Indians improving but fall to High-land Huskies in Division B-II tilt

HIGHLAND, NY — Stopping the run continued to be Liberty’s main problem as Highland’s Zach Cunningham ran for three touchdowns in the first quarter and tallied 190 yards rushing in Highland’s 48-14 win over visiting Liberty.

For Liberty coach Jim O’Connor, each week is an opportunity to step forward. “We played much better this week,” O’Connor said. Long runs set up fullback Brad Serini’s two one-yard touchdowns. Liberty was limited to three yards of rushing in the first quarter.

Liberty’s Trevor Tompkins had a great return on a kickoff, but a fumble halted the Indians’ drive. A long Husky pass play looked to set up another score, but Libery’s Cody Yaun caused a fumble. Highland led 21-0 at the half.

Tompkins had two 20-yard runs to start the second half, but the drive ended abruptly and Liberty punted. Liberty safety Joe Ruiz blocked a punt in the third quarter and Tompkins scored Liberty’s first touchdown. Highland bounced back with a big return, and a pair of long passes from quarterback Joe Pezzo to Tim Sweeney yielded another touchdown. After Liberty fumbled on the ensuing kickoff, Highland got a 15-yard rushing TD from Cunningham to make it 35-6.

Tompkins ran for a 60-yard TD in the fourth quarter, but Highland had the last word as Cunningham racked up his final TD on a five-yard run.

Liberty (0-2) hosts Tri-Valley (1-1) on September 16.
