CALLICOON, NY — At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 31, a new library was unveiled at the job corps center. John Henrey Young, director of the Delaware Valley Job Corp Center, said, “We are a full-fledged educational institution now that we have a library.

Rose Brenner, a library assistant, said the library was a student-and-teacher project that now had 4,000 books. The library contains books that complement many of the subjects taught at the school, such as automotive repair, carpentry and accounting, as well as mysteries and other fiction. The three branches of the Western Sullivan Public Library donated many of the books. Robert Lohr, a clerk at the Callicoon branch, said his branch donated about 600 books. He said many of the books had originally come from area residents, “so it was a real community project.”

The library includes a third-story, screened-in terrace, with room for about 25 chairs.

The Delaware Valley Jobs Corps Center, part of the federal job corps program, opened 27 years ago, targeting students between the ages of 16 and 24. Its goal is to equip students with enough knowledge and training to begin a career in a number of trades, and to provide students with the opportunity to obtain high school diplomas or equivalent degrees.
