Free compost bins available

WESTFALL, PA — Attendees of Pike County Cooperative Extension’s composing workshop will receive a free composting bin, as long as supplies last. The workshop will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2006 at Farm Plus in Westfall Township. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the program beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Compost is one of nature’s best mulches and soil amendments. Using compost improves soil structure, texture and aeration and increases the soil’s water-holding capacity. The organic matter provided in compost provides food for microorganisms, which keeps the soil in a healthy, balanced condition. Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus are produced naturally by the feeding of microorganisms, reducing or eliminating the need for soil amendments.

Pre-registration is required by Friday, September 8, and attendees should bring their own chairs.
