An awesome week

Devon Hogan, age 12, is a friend who recently attended an Audubon Society Youth Camp on the Maine Coast, in what became an unforgettable six days. I hope readers will enjoy Devon’s letter as much as I did. She writes:

“I had an awesome time at camp. It was the most wonderful experience I’ve had in my life. The food was the best… and I met a lot of good friends. I learned a lot about nature, like what kind of birds live in Maine… about endangered species in the United States, and some species of marine life that we put in the touch tank.

“The touch tank is a tank of seawater that has a lot of animals that live in the sea there, like sea stars, periwinkles and dog winkles. A dog winkle is a species of sea snail that is carnivorous and eats other snails in the ocean. There are a lot more species of animals that live in the ocean, obviously, but we only had a week and that’s basically what we learned about. And we learned about plankton, whales, and baleen.

“There’s a lot more to learn about, so I hope I can go back next year. I had so much fun there! Oh, and the plane ride there and back was wondrous! We went through a lot of clouds—it was just so peaceful! Too bad it only lasted one hour. You should have seen it: I saw clouds shaped like a kitten, a baby rabbit, and a sea turtle.

“I actually saw a shooting star at camp, too! It was amazing! It was the first and last one that I’ve seen in my whole life!”
