Historical society hauls coal

HONESDALE, PA — A 13,500-pound block of coal mined in 1882, which has been on display at the Wayne County Historical Society since the days of the D&H Gravity Railroad that brought it to Honesdale, has been moved to a new location in the building. With construction of the building’s new addition, the Marjorie Smith Gallery (“glass hallway”) will be enlarged, necessitating the coal’s move.

The move took all day and took a combination of brains and brawn—if the coal had fallen at any point, it would probably have shattered. It has found a new home as part of the D&H “Movin’ Energy” exhibit.
