Meet me at the fair

HONESDALE, PA — It’s time again for the Wayne County Fair, a regular event since 1862 and one of the biggest in our local area, pulling in as many as 90,000 visitors over the course of eight days. This year’s fair dates are Friday, August 4 through Saturday, August 12. The fair grounds open at 9:00 a.m., midway and rides are open from 12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m., and exhibit buildings are open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The fair includes a wide spectrum of attractions from old fashioned livestock judging and horse pulls to modern entertainments like a demolition derby and motorcycle stunts. Jimmy Sturr and his orchestra will be there to provide polka music, Ed and Geraldine will stroll the grounds with some old-time fiddling, and there will be daily pig-racing by Rosaire’s Racers. For those who prefer more traditional steeds, there will be harness racing on Wednesday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m., and on that day visitors can stick around for the fireworks—literally—at 9:15 p.m.

A long-time favorite, the firefighters competition, will take place on Thursday, August 10, and there will be one show only of a monster truck show on Friday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m. A complete schedule of the many other events and entertainers, including livestock judging, may be found at www.waynecountyfair.com.

Visitors pay $7 for admission to the fair grounds, all rides, parking, stage shows and most of the grandstand shows. Food, beverages, games, side shows and admission to the grandstand demolition derby and monster truck show cost extra.
