Historical photographs featured at antique show

HAWLEY, PA — There will be a rare exhibit of the photographs of Louis Hensel, a local photographer who recorded the history of this area during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, at the Antique Show & Sale on Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6 at the Wallenpaupack Area High School.

Born in New York City in 1849, Hensel moved to Port Jervis, NY in 1886 where be became a photographer’s assistant, learning the trade for which he would become well known. He opened his own business in 1875 and in 1878 moved his studio to Hawley.

Hensel was a prolific photographer, capturing scenes from Hawley, White Mills, Honesdale, Rowland, Lackawaxen, Parkers Glen, and towns whose names are no longer recognized, primarily on 5-inch by 8-inch glass plates. Unfortunately, much of his work was destroyed in a fire. Roughly 2,000 images, however, survive as a part of the archives of the Hawley Public Library. Today, thanks to modern technology of computers and digital scanning, much of Hensel’s work is being cleaned, repaired and preserved.

The exhibit will be available during regular show hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both days.
