FREMONT CENTER, NY - From the moment that the first pitch heads over the plate on Friday evening, August 4, to the final out of the championship game on August 6, the action will be non-stop and the excitement will build as the Seventh Annual Fremont Center Softball Tournament unfolds.

Organized by Loreen Gebelein, the tournament is a benefit for soon-to-be 15-year-old Nick Mootz of Kenoza Lake, who is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. (See riverreportersports.com for an article on Mootz entitled “In between the dark and the light.” The article also appeared in the July 27 issue of The River Reporter.)

The tournament will draw legions of fans and supporters to two ball fields in Fremont Center, which offer up concession stands, a beer truck, a recently constructed children’s playground named for the late Gracie Hillriegel and a welcoming shade area. The venueaffords spectators all the amenities they could ever desire to augment a weekend of top-notch softball for the greatest of causes.

Another tournament was held in Fremont Center earlier this summer to benefit Lenny Miret. The event raised $4,400 dollars for the youth soccer coach who is battling cancer. Many of the same teams will play this weekend including Matthew’s On Main, (a double winner), Stone Arch Inn, Sidetracks, American Electric, Davis Excavating, Ronny’s Ringers, McGurrin’s Pub, Sutphen East, Fitness Factory, Kohler Lumber, Darder’s Stone Works, Radio Shack of Hamlin, PA, FYI Graphics of Lake Ariel, PA, Indian Country of Hancock, and Westies, another fine team from Pennsylvania.

Nick Mootz, who is currently in remission from his bout with Hodkin’s Lymphoma, will be visiting the ballpark during the tournament. Doctors have limited his exposure to the sun but Mootz is anxious to see Tim “Chopper”Ackermann play. Mootz and his family are extremely grateful for all of the love and support they have received during the difficult ordeal that began when Nick was hospitalized on April 22.
