The upper shell (carapace) of the common snapping turtle is rough and ridged when the turtle is still quite young. As the turtle ages, its carapace becomes somewhat smoother.

Chelydra serpentina

As if the name isn’t daunting enough, the common snapping turtle, in its adult form, has a decidedly alarming appearance, with a large hooked jaw at one end and a long tail topped with jagged tooth-like projections at the other. Loose warty skin covers the neck and scaly legs end in claws.
