Nugget rides big seventh inning to roar past Discovery
Nugget has struggled in A division but still tops second place B team
By RICHARD A. ROSS
MONGAUP VALLEY, NY - With a 5-10 record, Nugget wishes they were back in the B division, which they topped last year. Instead, they have had to deal with the battering from tough A division teams such as Charlies Angels, Cooper Paint, Dutchs Bar and Klein & Sons Logging.
On July 24, they encountered the second- best team in the B division in The Center for Discovery.
Discovery had troubles of its own this past week when they relinquished first place to New Hope with back-to-back losses. The Diamonds look forward to the upcoming playoffs for a chance to even the score.
Both Nugget and Discovery struggled early on at the plate. Nugget got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth behind a two-run double from Patti Andersen.
Discovery, a team that showed crisp defense, got one run in the bottom of the frame with a booming leadoff homer from Terri Lewis. Discovery went on to take a 4-2 lead, with three runs in the bottom of the sixth behind RBI singles from Angie Bakos, Bonnie Blackwell and Julie Diescher. Coach Mark Floyd encouraged his ladies to play good defense, get three outs and survive for the win.
But Nugget had other ideas.
They plated an impressive seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, which began with a leadoff single from Megan Kitson and Sam Biro reaching on an E-6. Rebecca Sykes blasted a two-run triple to tie the game. Nugget added more runs from the bats of Kendra Harris, Ro Steuber, Kelly Schadt, Andersen and Biro.
Steuber retired the side in the bottom of the seventh, allowing only a single to Chelsea Carlson.
Nugget improved to 6-10 while The Center for Discovery fell to 8-6.
